Route bus transport – stakeholders, vehicles and new design directions

چکیده
In providing a review of the Australian bus industry, this paper describes some of the key issues that are affecting route bus public transport; a complex array of stakeholders and a key tool – the route bus – which exhibits considerable variation in specification. Information gathered by empirical means and through literature suggests that the stakeholders are many, their roles complex and intertwined; yet the overall goal of providing successful transportation services to the public is fundamentally clear. By examining the roles of operators, governments, manufacturers and the end users this paper identifies the nature of some of the problems facing the route bus transport task, refining the possible contribution of design in such an environment. The current state of the Bus Industry is the result of the relationships between the stakeholders as much as their input to the provision of transport. Specifically, the information indicates that Industrial Design in not an active discipline w ithin the Bus Industry and is veiled by the actions and mechanics of those involved in bringing a bus into its service life. Further to the stakeholder review, an analysis of route bus specifications provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of this principle industry tool whilst testing some common beliefs regarding functional specification. In light of the stakeholders and their roles, specification analysis enables the identification of trends and subsequent problems; providing specific areas for the development of research and possible solutions.

A demand-based methodology for planning the bus network of a small or medium town
This work aims at developing a demand-based methodology for designing the bus network of a small or medium town. The proposed modelling tool adopts a multi-agent objective function which evaluates performance in the context of different stakeholders: the surplus of travellers (car and bus users); the bus service provider’s revenues and operation costs. This approach was applied to an existing b...
متن کاملPublic Transport Ontology for Passenger Information Retrieval
Passenger information aims at improving the user-friendliness of public transport systems while influencing passenger route choices to satisfy transit user’s travel requirements. The integration of transit information from multiple agencies is a major challenge in implementation of multi-modal passenger information systems. The problem of information sharing is further compounded by the multi-l...
متن کاملControl Strategies for an Electric Hybrid Bus Adapted to a Specific Route
If hybrid vehicles are to be judged in a fair way, the whole system has to be taken into consideration. This includes not only the specific vehicle with its software, but also the driver and the environment in which the vehicle is driven. Simulation is one way to do this. City buses give an extra potential for hybrid systems, if the software takes the specific route and time table into consider...
متن کاملNew Fuzzy Bus Signal Priority Control System Design Based on Wireless Sensor Networks
Bus rapid transit (BRT) is one of most effective methods to optimize urban traffic. Transit signal priority (TSP) is very important to increase the efficiency of BRT. TSP provides priority signals for public transport vehicles based on the advanced inspection and communication system. In this paper, TSP control system is designed with wireless sensor networks, which can support real-time inform...
